Campaign work of Patient Safety First to begin new phase

From April 2010 the work of Patient Safety First, to make patient safety everyones highest priority will begin a new phase. An NHS with no avoidable death and no avoidable harm is the vision of Patient Safety First, and from April 2010 the support, resources and approach will be continued as part of the mainstream work of the National Patient Safety Agency. This will allow for greater alignment and concentration of resources and build on the evidence-based interventions, the on-line resources and support materials such as the popular How to guides..

Over 96% of acute Trusts and 62% of non acute Trusts have voluntarily signed-up to Patient Safety First and will be encouraged and supported to accelerate and intensify their local activities in putting patient safety first using approaches to implementation based on proven improvement methods.

Suzette Woodward, Patient Safety Firsts Director of Implementation said The ethos of Patient Safety First has engaged people throughout the NHS in how they can work together and change practice to reduce avoidable harm and make patient care safer and more reliable. I will be responsible for continuing Patient Safety Firsts work through the National Patient Safety Agency. This will enable greater alignment of this ethos, passion and commitment with the patient safety improvement work throughout the NHS.
