World Heart Rhythm Week: Eucomed joins Arrhythmia Alliance in raising awareness of heart rhythm disorders globally

> Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as cardiac arrhythmia and stroke are the chief causes of death globally; CVD costs the EU economy 192 billion a year;

> Cardiac arrhythmia is one of the leading causes of death in the world; in the UK alone, there are more than 2 million people with an arrhythmia;

> Medical devices and innovative medical technologies can help reduce this global burden and improve patients lives.

Brussels, 8 June 2010 Eucomed, the Medical Technology Industry Association, supports the World Heart Rhythm Week, a global event bringing together individuals and organisations to raise awareness about the impact of arrhythmias. This years campaign is themed, Know Your Pulse, and aims at promoting a better understanding of arrhythmic conditions and ensuring that preventive procedures such as pulse checks become routine.

The medical technology industry contributes widely to improve the condition and quality of life of people with cardiovascular disease. Millions of patients in Europe and in the world have already been treated with breakthrough innovations such as pacemakers and ICDs says John Wilkinson, Chief Executive of Eucomed. At the same time, prevention is equally important and simple health check procedures such as knowing your pulse can save lives, he ends.

The World Heart Rhythm Week takes place from 7 to 13 June 2010 and has been established by the Arrhythmia Alliance, a UK coalition of individuals, patients groups, charities, professional medical groups and industry allies. Any organisation, supporters and health professionals with an interest in improving the effective diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of individuals affected by cardiac arrhythmias are invited to support this global initiative.
