First MHRA-Registered Mobile Phone App Released

A new app for burn patients has recently received approval by UK MHRA as a medical device. Mersey Burns is the first app to be registered with the agency as a Class I medical device, according to a blog post on the website of d4, a UK nonprofit organisation.

App for burn patients The app calculates burn area percentages and fluid protocols and records patient details. It was released last week and works on the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. It was developed by two plastic surgeons at Whiston Hospital and a PhD student of computer science at the University of Manchester.

Calculating fluid protocols for burn patients requires the use of a complex formula and it can be difficult to estimate burn area percentages. Using the app, a doctor highlights the areas that are burned and enters information about the patient such as weight, height and age. The app then calculates the fluid protocols for the doctor.

Research confirms that the tool not only calculates the burn area and fluid protocols, but that it does so with more accuracy than the traditional method, according to the d4 blog.
