Have you worked or are you working abroad?
  • Would you recommend the experience?
  • I would recommend going abroad it opens the mind for example I have worked in Canada, Holland and Saudi Arabia
  • in what capacity did you work in each of these countries
  • In canada I started as an OR Tech in uk its Scrub tech then I transferred to the Respiratory Therapy department and worked as a Qualified non-registered respiratory technologist. I n Holland I was anaesthesia assistant but our role was advanced compared to the UK we gave the anaesthetics managed the patients as there is one consultant for two rooms. In saudi I went back to being an Respiratory Therapist but occasionally helping out in theatres now here in the UK RT's do not exist I think I am the only one and it is my impression that our hospitals should go the same way ans the USA & Canada including 3/4's of the world have Respiratory Therapy departments we as RT's provide real expertise which is not available here in this country sad to say.
  • Just one issue India have moved away from the British system and has moved the way of the USA and they have RT's now and advanced anaesthesia technicians and this country I hate to say is really lagging behind
  • I lived and worked in the USA for 2 years, on the wards.  It was an experience and has changed my outlook on healthcare now.  I love socialised medicine as we cannot become bankrupt for needing medical attention, even if we have to wait a while, as we do.

I would certainly recommend working in a different country to experience how other healthcare providers provide.   I was unfortunate enough to receive a spider bite and went to the ED, where the first question was "do you have insurance?" Costs were still discussed before treatment and credit card details were taken.

  • did someone say uk lagging behind India?

Saudi can still be financially rewarding. The rest of the middle east would be a lifestyle choice. I would definitely recommend it rather than staying in local hospitals.
