Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate
SCIENTIFIC MEETING AND COURSE
Thursday 30th and Friday 31st May 2013
The Clinical School, Addenbrooke's Hospital
This is a practical modular 2 day course in the use of the Holmium Laser for Prostatic Disease and includes surgery simulation, and laser safety core of knowledge. We shall show its use as a day surgery technique allowing you to benefit from the financial premium that day surgery caries whilst benefitting from lower costs for your department and hospital.
Your whole team is welcome. We especially welcome nurses and administrators.
The course is ideal for novices and those wishing to develop their experience further and will form an invaluable part of the Holmium User Group (HUG) Mentoring Program.
We encourage the principles of modular training, initiated by HUG with live demonstrations of Holmium Laser Enucleation (HoLEP) and morcellation. There will be a Core of Knowledge Course leading to the Laser Safety certificate as outlined in MHRA DB 2008 (3) followed by hands on simulation with the laser and morcellator.
Finally we will be holding the biannual meeting of the Holmium Users Group (HUG) to which all are welcome.
The course is modular and upon booking you can choose any of the modules (hands on Laser simulation requires a valid Core of Knowledge Laser Safety certificate available upon completion of the course) either singularly or together over the 2 days.

June 2013
Euroanaesthesia 2013
Barcelona, 1 – 4 June 2013
Euroanaesthesia 2012 in Paris was a great success and highly rated. Needless to say nothing is so good that it cannot be improved! The Board and the scientific and other committees are working diligently with the secretariat to make Euroanaesthesia 2013 an even greater success.
In the meantime the Scientific Subcommittees have worked hard to prepare an interesting and inspiring programme for presentations of state-of-the art educational and scientific contents. I cannot go into all of the details here but just want to capture your inquisivity. The congress will include 40 refresher courses, 70 symposia, 37 workshops, 4 pre-congress courses, 2 postgraduate courses, 6 general lectures as well as several guest sessions and specialist society meetings. This is only the outline and many more professional and social activities await you. In addition to the predefined programme about 1000 scientific abstracts will present the latest developments in anaesthesia, intensive care, pain and emergency medicine. The traditional Sir Robert Macintosh Lecture will be given by Prof Göran Hedenstierna, Uppsala, Sweden in recognition of his seminal investigations on the effects of general anaesthesia on the respiratory function. Several research grants will be awarded to young researchers. These grants recognize outstanding research in different areas of our discipline.
The Basic Sciences Anaesthetic Course will be organised for the second time in Barcelona. This course is designed as a preparatory course in basic sciences for EDAIC candidates. In 2012 more than 1500 candidates took the European Diploma Examination (EDAIC) part I in one of the 36 international centres ESA has been able to recruit. This represents an all-time high and we are expecting even more candidates from all over Europe in the future.
Another success story is the only two year old Clinical Trial Network. Within a short time the organizing centres were able to enroll more than 10000 patients in each of several clinical trials. Starting this year three more clinical trials have been selected. These are still open for application (see www.esahq.com). More information will be presented in Barcelona.
The General Assembly will be another very important event at Euroanaesthesia 2013. Besides the usual business an important issue will be the voting on the new By-Laws. These have been diligently prepared after several rounds of discussion between Council, members and the task force. After a last feedback at the end of 2012 the task force will prepare a final version which will then be sent to all members and presented for voting in Barcelona. My plea to all of you is to make yourselves familiar with the By-Laws. My hope is that we can have a clear vote on them at the next General Assembly. The suggested changes are needed to prepare the ESA for many ongoing and future developments.
Thus, I am excited to invite you to the Euroanaesthesia 2013 in Barcelona. What can you do to make this a successful and inspiring meeting? Save the date June 1-4, 2013 and plan on attending the meeting in Barcelona! I am sure that Euroanaesthesia 2013 will be memorable and worth attending.

Live Advanced Endoscopy Study Day
Thursday July 4th 2013
University College Hospital London NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH)
UCLH study day to demonstrate best practice for PENTAX i-scan
University College Hospital London NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is hosting its third hands-on gastrointestinal endoscopy study day on Thursday July 4th, focussing this time on upper GI, as well as exploring the effective use of PENTAX Medicals HD+ and i-scan imaging system.
The first two events proved very successful with Consultant Endoscopists from around the UK commenting that the chance to watch live procedures and talk to experts in the field of gastroenterology at UCLH was extremely useful. This latest study day is entitled: Endoscopic diagnosis of early neoplasia in the Oesophagus and will feature live endoscopy cases with a focus on:
- Enhanced optical imaging techniques for lesion recognition
- Mucosal classification systems for early neoplasia
- Chromoendoscopy
- Radiofrequency ablation
- Endoscopic mucosal resection
The faculty for the study day includes Dr Rehan Haidry, Dr Matthew Banks, Dr Laurence Lovat and Professor Krish Ragunath (Nottingham), and the session runs from 9am until 5pm at University College Hospital, London.
The experts will be leading four live cases which attendees can view and discuss amongst fellow delegates in a small group environment. There will also be a presentation given by PENTAX Medical product specialist, providing a technical overview of the HD+ and i-scan imaging system which deliver live, clear 1.3 million pixel images and its virtual chromoendoscopy options, ideal for early cancer detection.
I am extremely pleased that our i-scan study days have been very well received by our peers, particularly the opportunity for observation and discussion in small groups during our live cases, said Dr Matthew Banks, UCLH. It is great to be able to share our knowledge and experience of the clinical benefits presented by HD+ and i-scan imaging. We also appreciate the feedback from attendees to ensure that future study days will even better meet the educational needs of our delegates.
This course has been awarded 6 CPD points (Continual Professional Development) by the Royal College of Physicians.
